Xena's ring was an item that was forged by Xena whilst she was a Valkyrie. It was created from the mystical substance of Rheingold, a rare metal. The ring has control over the wearer if they have not forsaken love. It turned Grinhilda into the monstrous Grindl, robbing her of what she valued the most - her beauty.

35 years later after it was made and transformed Grinhilda, Xena sets out to put things right, when Grindl escapes from her eternal prisonment. However, Xena was forced to put the ring on and lost her memory (or more accurately, her sense of self, what she valued most), due to her love for Gabrielle. In order to ensure that Xena's memory would return, Brunhilda created a flame to protect her, that only Xena could pass through.

Xena's ring is based upon the Ring of the Nibelungs, an artifact in Norse myth. The story of the ring inspired an 18th century German opera, Der Ring das Nibelungen. J.R.R. Tolkein's The Lord of the Rings is also rumored to have been inspired by the Ring of the Nibelungs and the associated tales.
