Tiresias was a blind prophet or seer who delighted in prognostications of "gloom and doom." He encountered Hercules in Parthus and accompanied him as he led a group of homeless villagers to the charmed city of Calydon (HTLJ "The Road to Calydon").

Tiresias later met Hercules in Meliad. He predicted horrible events would occur at a festival honouring Dionysus but in the end, he helped Hercules to stop Ares from infecting the populace of the city with his evil (HTLJ "The Festival of Dionysus").

Mythological basis[]

  • Tiresias was a celebrated prophet in Greek mythology, associated closely with the city of Thebes, where he advised seven generations of kings and heroes, including Cadmus, Oedipus and Antigone. After his death, he resided in the Asphodel Meadows, where Ulysses eventually consulted his shade.
  • In an interesting development, a Mycenaean-era tablet from Knossos, written in the ancient Linear B script, mentions someone named "qe-ra-si-ja", which would enter later Greek as "Tiresias", suggesting the name began as a very ancient title.[1]
