Legendary Journeys

Sirens are the servants of Poseidon, whose unearthly singing lures sailors to their deaths as they steer their ships into the rocks. No man can resist their song, but (as Xena demonstrated) women are unaffected.

Poseidon sent three Sirens to prevent Ulysses from returning to Ithaca, but Xena helped him avoid them by singing herself (as by this time, he was in love with her).

Discord sent this a Siren to waylay the Argonauts on their quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece. Her song lured them to the shore where she fed them enchanted food which caused them to become animalistic. In this state, two of the Argonauts killed each other (Young Hercules).

Background[]

  • The Siren in Young Hercules was played by Anouk Koene.
    • Appeared in: Young Hercules (Movie Pilot), Young Hercules (Novelization)
    • Played by: Anouk Koene In order to attract the Argonauts to Ithra, Discord disguised herself as the Siren. She sang to catch their attention, and lured them into a cave where she provided a feast of food and wine. She danced as they ate, and stood aside as the bewitched Argonauts turned violent and fought amongst themselves. Only Hercules saw her guise flicker back to Discord.
  • The origin of the Sirens varies, but they are generally understood as the daughters of Terpsichore and Achelous, the senior river god of Greece.
  • In mythology, Sirens were believed to be bird-women, similar to Harpies, but later on were perceived as fish-women akin to Merpeople. In fact, the word for "mermaid" in many European languages derives from "siren".
