Shark Island Prison was a real place off the coast of Florida. A true story made into a movie in the 1950s.
In Xena series the prison was introduced in Season 4 Episode Locked Up and Tied Down. Xena was a prisoner for a while, Gabrielle - a healer, and Xena's former victim Thalassa - commandant.
