The Northern Amazon tribe[3] was one of the twelve scattered tribes of the Amazon Nation that was located possibly near or in Siberia.[1]

Description[]

The culture of the Northern Amazons was, of all the tribes, most similar to the Tretomlec culture that gave rise to the Amazons in the first place. Because their choice of territory was sparsely populated and far from most centers of civilization, they fared better than most of the other tribes after the breakup of the Amazon Nation, at least for a time.[1]

The Northern Amazons were also notable for their spiritual life, eschewing the worship (or at least the priesthood) of Artemis in favor of powerful Shamanesses.[2]

History[]

During her days as a bloodthirsty warlord, Xena travelled through Siberia with Borias' Army after the failed attempt to conquer the Lao and Ming kingdoms. Despite being offered to turn over a new leaf and ritualistically join the Northern Amazons, she turned on the tribe and killed the legendary Amazon Queen Cyane and the entire High Council of the tribe and met a former Amazon Alti, who predicted her ability to become the "Destroyer of Nations," and told her of the Ixion Stone. Meanwhile, Alti entrapped various deceased members of the tribe, including Cyane in the Amazon Land of the Dead and turned their essence into evil energy.[1][2]

Return of Xena[]

Over ten years later, Xena returned to Siberia to seek out her soul mate Gabrielle, who she believed was dead, in the Amazon Land of the Dead. Xena helped the Northern Amazons, killing Alti and releasing the dead members of the Northern Amazon tribe from the Amazon Land of the Dead, before learning of Gabrielle's still-living status. It was through Alti in Siberia that Xena received her vision of Gabrielle and her future crucifixion. Before leaving, she fulfilled Alti's prophecy and allowed Otere, a child she had tormented during her dark warlord days, to take her power as the rightful leader of the Northern Amazons, which she had accidentally gained when she killed Cyane.[1][2]

When Alti later returned in spirit form into Xena's dreams, the latter visited Queen Yakut in Siberia in order to discover how to fight back against Alti and protect her unborn child. She traveled with Gabrielle and Amarice, and Amarice joined the Northern Amazons at this time.[3]

Approximately six months thereafter, the Northern Amazons found themselves under attack by a tribe of Semite nomads, resulting in the deaths of many Amazons from the tribe, Amarice and Yakut amongst them.

Twilight of the Gods[]

Eve ritualistically joining the Northern Amazons

After Eve's birth, and in hiding from the Greek Gods, Xena and Gabrielle travelled to Siberian and the Northern Amazons. Although originally intending to ritually have Eve join the Amazon tribe[4], they decided to stay and briefly reformed the Northern Amazons with the deceased Yakut's help. During this time, Gabrielle briefly took on the role of an Amazon queen and made Eve her heir with a Rite of Caste. They later left Siberia to help out Cleopatra in Egypt.[5]

Over twenty-five years later, the Northern Amazons travelled out of Siberia, led by their queen Cyane to join the newly founded Amazon Nation, combined of a number of known Amazon tribes.[6]

Trivia[]

  • It was not known if Eve ever returned to the tribe and resumed her reign as the rightful leader of the Northern Amazons by the virtue of her Rite of Caste, however, it was unlikely as during her mid-twenties, Cyane was the queen and unified her tribe with the other scattered remnants of the re-unified Amazon Nation to create a single tribe and Eve followed a quest for redemption for her past crimes as "Livia of Rome".[6]
  • According to the most recent Queen Cyane, the Northern Amazons do not kill and execute their captives once they had surrendered in battle.[6]
  • The Northern Amazon tribe, and probably the Tretomlec as well, appear to have been located in Siberia, or at least in the steppes and taiga regions of central Asia, beyond the Ural and Caucases mountains that separate Europe and Asia. This was never stated on-screen however. The terrain and climate of their territory certainly seem to suggest this, as do the costumes worn by its members. Furthermore, Xena and Borias had to cross their territory to get back to Europe from Chin- the only ways to cross Asia on horseback are to cut across the steppes or to pass through the semi-arid Middle East, which they clearly did not do.
  • The Northern Amazons also utilised a special type of arrows that was unique to them.[6]
