Mab was a powerful sorceress, an associate of King Arthur and a former apprentice of the great wizard Merlin. Unlike her teacher, who disapproved of Arthur's tyranny, Mab delighted in and encouraged Arthur's dark side. When Arthur attempted to claim the mighty sword Excalibur, Mab was at his side, but was entrapped by the time-travel spell that Merlin had placed on it.

In the past, Mab assisted Arthur in locating the Lady of the Lake, who recognized Arthur as its prophesied wielder. Mab shortly betrayed Arthur and seized the sword, intending to use it to kill Merlin before he could realize his full potential. Realizing the error of his ways, Arthur threw in his lot with Hercules and Morrigan, while Mab was handily destroyed by the young Merlin, thus ensuring his destiny as the greatest wizard in history.(HTLJ: "Once Upon a Future King")

Background Information[]

  • Queen Mab is a faerie queen mentioned briefly in Romeo and Juliet, a work which deals neither with Arthurian legend nor Greek mythology. Although many retellings insert her into the former, HTLJ might be the first to do so with the latter.
  • In the Arthurian Legends, Arthur's chief nemesis was Morgan Le Fay, not Mab. Mab is a figure from Celtic myth, and Queen of Tir na Bhog, known as Titania in Shakespeare's "A Mid-Summer's Nights Dream."
  • Coincidentally, Claire Stansfield has stated that that she based her portrayal of Alti on Queen Mab as portrayed by Miranda Richardson in the 1998 miniseries Merlin.
  • Sara Wiseman (who plays Mab) and Neill Rea (who plays Arthur) were once married.
