King Lynaeus was the father of the prince Sarpedon. He and his rival King Barus were in the process of resolving a war between their provinces, but the agreement included (for rather petty reasons) the destruction of two of Aphrodite's temples. The goddess took offense to this and proceeded to meddle in the affair.
