In 1997, at the height of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' popularity, Universal Studios decided to capitalize on the series by having Kevin Sorbo play the titular Kull the Conqueror. This film was originally being developed as a sequel to the Conan films but Arnold Schwarzenegger declined to participate so, instead, it became a story about another Robert E. Howard character, Kull of Atlantis.

Although HTLJ was generally geared towards a family audience, Kull the Conqueror was targeted towards a slightly higher age bracket, as the film featured a level of explicit language, sex and violence not seen in most Xenaverse productions. In spite of this, ToyBiz released a small line of action figures to coincide with the film's release.

The film was a critical and commercial flop, garnering mostly negative reviews and grossing a mere $22,000,000 against a $20,000,000 budget.
