Erythia in "Reunions"

Erythia in "Reunions"

Erythia is the mother of Iolaus with her late husband, Skouros. She later re-married the poet, Pandion.

Iolaus left home rather abruptly, leaving Erythia very upset. Iolaus didn't realize how it must have hurt her until seeing Ruff leave, which caused Iolaus to remark "Now I know how my mother must have felt when I left home." (Young Hercules: "A Serpent's Tooth")

After Alcmene's death and Hercules's ascension to Olympus, Iolaus went to visit his mother. Although thrilled herself, Pandion called Iolaus out on his treatment of her over the years, pointing out that someone shouldn't have do die for a mother to see her son. Their rift was somewhat healed by Iolaus's subsequent actions. (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys: "Reunions")

Background[]

  • Erythia was played by Glenis Levestem.
  • In mythology, Iolaus's parents were Automedusa and Iphicles.
  • Erytheia or Erythia (Ancient Greek: Ἐρυθεία) ("the red one"), part of Greek mythology, is one of the three Hesperides. The name was applied to the island close to the coast of southern Hispania, that was the site of the original Punic colony of Gadeira.[1] Pliny's Natural History (4.36) records of the island of Gades: "On the side which looks towards Spain, at about 100 paces distance, is another long island, three miles wide, on which the original city of Gades stood. By Ephorus and Philistides it is called Erythia, by Timæus and Silenus Aphrodisias, and by the natives the Isle of Juno." The island was the seat of Geryon, who was overcome by Heracles.[2]
