 with the one remaining Destroyer

Hope with the one remaining Destroyer

The Destroyers were a species of six creatures designed by Dahak to be birthed into the world through his daughter, Hope, and Ares. These creatures were to eat the righteous and kill the remaining gods of the the world who did not side with Dahak's new world order. However due to Xena, Gabrielle, Joxer and even Callisto's interference in Dahak's plans, only one of the Destroyers was born.(Xena: Warrior Princess: "Sacrifice II") It grew very fast, reaching a height of over 7 feet tall in less than a few months.

The Destroyer was capable of eating any kind of meat, from sheep to humans. Hope kept it in a cave outside Potidaea and came by to check on it and feed it every once in a while, but sometimes it got out to find food for itself. It usually ate livestock, but it eventually progressed to killing humans. The Destroyer could only come out at night though, because it couldn't bear the sunlight. It loved its mother very much and, in spite of its deadly abilities and dark destiny, had a personality like a very young child. It could even speak a little bit.

While it was stated that the Destroyers would not have souls, it did display a level of tenderness and innocence that may prove otherwise. Like Hope, the Destroyer sought the love of its mother, which inevitably became its undoing.

The Destroyer met its end when Xena came to Potidaea looking for Gabrielle, where she found out about the Destroyer. She tried to fight it, but it was too strong and covered in deadly spikes, so she couldn't get to it. She finally was able to kill it when Gabrielle pretended to be Hope and distracted it while Xena stabbed it in the back. Hope came running in and The Destroyer killed her as it was dying, thinking she Gabrielle. (Xena: Warrior Princess: "A Family Affair")

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Superhuman Strength: The creature had overwhelming strength, on par with Hercules and most battle gods. It was able to lift enemies high into the air, rip apart walls, and subdue Xena in a face-to-face fight.
  • Superhuman Speed: The Destroyer was seen being able to quickly appear in different places and close the distance between himself and Xena during their fights.
  • Superhuman Durability: The Destroyer had an unusually tough hide and was resistant, but not invulnerable, to many attacks. This made it difficult for the creature to be harmed by any hit or weapon.
  • Killing Gods: An unseen ability, uniquely granted to the Destroyers by Dahak's line was the power to kill gods. Although we didn't get the chance to see it in play, the original plan for the Destroyers was to lay waste to other gods, eluding to this power.
  • Spiked Hide: One of the Destroyer's most dangerous features was that its hide was covered in long, razor sharp spikes. These prevented anyone from getting too close to it without being injured, even those that the Destroyer didn't mean to harm, such as Hope. One spike, nearly a foot and a half, sat on the side of its wrist, which the Destroyer used as a weapon.

Abilities[]

  • Gifted Intellect: While primal and beastlike, the Destroyer was more than just a mindless force. It showed cleverness and strategy in battle, using both tools and its surroundings to fight with as much strategy as a trained warrior.
  • Stealth: Even with the beast's great size, it was able to sneak up on Xena several times during a fight. While the Warrior Princess' senses can usually pick up on the presence of arrows and even gods, she was not able to detect the Destroyer when it was hiding and maneuvering around her in the barn.

Weaknesses[]

  • Light: The Destroyer had a sensitivity to light. Fire warded it away as when Xena held a lantern against it and the villagers burned torches to protect themselves after nightfall. The Destroyer also avoided daylight hours by hiding in a cave. While light doesn't seem to physically harm it, the Destroyer still seems afraid of or disturbed by light.
  • Love: Although the creature was stated to be soulless in Sacrifice II, the Destroyer does seem to have honest emotions and feel both sadness and love. Its love for Hope is what led to its death in the end.
  • Mortality: Even though the Destroyer is the child of a god and a demigoddess, it is still vulnerable to mortal wounds. While its hide is tough, the creature was finally killed by being run through with Xena's sword.
