Beowulf was a Danish hero who sought out Xena's help when facing Grindl. He later helped Gabrielle in searching for Xena when Xena disappeared for a year.

The story takes place in Scandinavia. Beowulf, a hero of Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose room of mead in Heorot has been attacked by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf kills him, Grendel's mother attacks the room and is also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf returns to his home in Geatland (Götaland in modern Sweden) and later becomes the king of the Geats. After a period of fifty years, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is mortally wounded in battle. After his death, his assistants cremated his body and erected a tower on a promontory in his memory.
