Bear was the pet dog of Alcmene when she was living with a teenaged Hercules. He was present when Ares visited the farm under the guise of a traveler, and calmed Bear down immediately just by looking at him. It is not known how long Bear lived, or when he died.
His interaction with Ares is a nod to a frequent character trait of Ares' where he is good with dogs; he has a pet dog named Graegus, and he eventually adopts a dog named Horace.
