An Avatar is a deity or supreme being from Hindu culture, also refers to the material appearance or incarnation of a deity on earth, Rama and Eli were both Avatars, who were both assisted by Hanuman at some point in their lives.
An avatar or avatara is a mortal being who holds at least a portion of a divine being within themselves. The Hindu deities often devoted portions of themselves to avatars to interact with the mortal realm, particularly when humanity was under threat from a major calamity or demon lord. That Eli was an avatar suggests that the producers intended him to be Buddha (Vishnu's ninth avatar) as well as Jesus.
